How We Work

At Woodward Press we are committed to providing the support you need, when you need it.

We Do…

  • …offer clients the chance to purchase services at any stage of the self-publishing process. Whether your book’s still in the draft phase or you’ve finished everything but the cover, we can help.
  • …ensure that any images or fonts used in book covers that our designers create are properly licensed. You’ll never have to worry about graphics rights infringements with us.
  • …give our clients project updates at every stage. We don’t let our clients fall into the dreaded limbo of unanswered emails, and on the rare occasions that we don’t answer the phone we always call back.
  • …offer classes for those who’d like to learn how to publish their own e-books. Classes are currently by request only, for groups of 5-8 students. The classes meet for four, two-hour sessions and are $175 per person.
  • …offer specific marketing guidance and support: for a fee, we will research and develop a comprehensive marketing plan that is tailored to your book(s). We can create a website for you if you don’t already have one, and we can write and distribute press releases and create professional, unified print materials for you if you don’t already have them. We can also update the look of your existing marketing materials.

We Don’t…

  • …take royalties. Ever. You retain all rights to your book and you receive all royalties allowed by the distribution channels you select.
  • …hit you with surprise charges. If a project turns out to entail more work than we originally estimated, our team members will do everything possible to keep your cost within that original estimate. If that simply is not possible or if the scope of a project changes – if, for example, you decide your simple layout job needs significant edits – we will provide you with a new estimate before we begin any work not explicitly covered by the original estimate. No matter what, you’ll know how much your project will cost at every step in the process.
  • …sell vague “marketing packages.” Ever. We’ve learned from experience that marketing which works very well for one book will fail for another. We can’t promise great results for everyone, so we will not offer marketing packages involving endless cycles of useless tweets, miniscule advertisements at horrendous markups, or spammy email marketing campaigns to any of our clients. A brief overview of the specific ways in which we can help you market your book is coming soon, but rest assured: when it comes to, say, charging you $3,999 to spend one hour signing books at a table you could rent yourself for $1600 for two days…well, that just isn’t in our wheelhouse.

Getting Started

There are three ways to begin working with us:

1. Skip the sessions

Feel free to just check out our price list and choose the services you need the most. You can mix and match services to suit your preferences and your budget. Contact us with your list and any questions, and we’ll get things started by putting you together with providers who can meet your needs.

2. Attend an introductory workshop

These workshops are designed to present an overview of the Woodward Press alternative publishing process. We will make sure you leave with a good understanding of what each step along the way entails and how much it costs. Steps covered in our workshops include:

  • Manuscript assessment: is your manuscript really ready?
  • Editing and proofreading options
  • Creating your book’s plan:
    • Targeting your niche
    • Cover design
    • Ebook formatting
    • Print formatting and layout
    • Printing
    • Going live
    • Website/blog
    • Marketing and distribution options

Introductory workshops are $25 to attend. There is a minimum of 5 attendees per workshop. All attendees will receive a 5% discount off of the cost of our services for one year from the date of the workshop.

3. Contact us for a consult

If you’d prefer a one-on-one session in which a Woodward Press principal (that’s right, an owner – not a sales rep) sits down with you and walks you through the topics listed above, simply contact us. Let us know who you are and a little about the book you have in mind. One of us will get back to you within one business day to set up a consultation.

One-on-one consulting sessions last for approximately an hour. If it’s available, we’ll ask to see the first 1,000 words of your work in progress several days prior to the meeting. We’ll also ask a few questions about your plans for your book(s). This will help ensure that we spend the hour as productively as possible. The cost for a consultation is $50 up to 75 minutes, and $25 for each hour or part of an hour after that. Everyone who completes a consultation receives a 5% discount off of the cost of our services for one year from the date of the consultation.

Working with Your Providers

Once you are set up with your selected providers the Woodward Press principals step aside and let you and them get the job done. We will actively monitor the relationship to make sure you are receiving the level of service you expect, so you may get emails from us now and then as we check on things.

Of course if there’s ever a problem, we ask that you contact us immediately. We’ll make sure all parties are satisfied. At the completion of the job we’ll also contact you to get your assessment of the work.
